People often ask me where my inspiration comes from and how I create collections each season. I always answer that it comes from “EVERYWHERE,” which is true. Anything that starts to look new and fresh to the eye becomes a direction that feels right.
The actual design process has a formula that I always follow…
First, I come up with a theme. This happens as I’m scouring trend services, instagram, pinterest, traveling and from everyday life. It’s funny, I can be in the most unlikely place and see a great fabric or book cover that inspires a color palate or print; a year later that garment is hanging in our stores. Ironically, I’ll be designing Spring 2019 in the dead of winter when we are freezing in NYC (winter is designed during the hot days of summer). But the bright colors and spring and summer silhouettes always make me feel happy and excited for the next season to come.
I work a year in advance –so that we have time to sample and ship everything to the stores.
Second, I’ll design new styles and choose a color palate for the collection that gets sketched and presented to our amazing sales team at egg. The collection is never designed in a vacuum – there are many people at egg that give feedback of all kinds. Past selling history is analyzed and incorporated into the designs. This is crucial for the collection to progress and unfold successfully.
Third, all the prints, graphics are designed in our New York City Design Studio – located in Tribeca behind our flagship store, with my amazing design team. We sample the collection and sell it to the stores.
Spring/Summer 2019’s theme is “Beautiful Blue Skies and Gardens”- Look for it coming to a store near you in about a year!
